Deborah and Steven Decker had two beautiful boys --- Matthew, and then 16 months later, Nathan. Following the birth of Nathan, their joy began to mix with concern, as they began to notice that Matthew was not reaching many of his developmental milestones. Specialists later confirmed their fears. Matthew had autism. A year later they learned that Nathan did as well.
Deborah Decker holds a degree in psychology from the University of Central Oklahoma and has devoted nearly twenty years to law enforcement. Much of this time has been dedicated to investigating crimes against children. Despite the hectic demands of her job, Mrs. Decker has committed herself to autism and special needs advocacy. She is currently the President of the Central Oklahoma chapter of the Autism Society of America. In this role, she has created many new opportunities for respite and recreation for the special needs community.
She created Samuel’s Call at St. Luke’s United Methodist church in Oklahoma City, which is a respite program that allows parents of special needs children the chance to have a few hours for themselves. Once a month, these parents can leave their kids with experienced, volunteer care providers. This gives the parents a rare opportunity to enjoy a movie, go shopping or simply reconnect with their spouse. As committed as she is to advocacy, she is even more committed to her special sons. They are her world. Everything she does demonstrates her passion to make their world a better place for them.
Steven Decker stays home to care for the boys and is an author and illustrator. His book, Zack the Prairie Dog is a heart-warming, exciting and inspirational tale about a prairie dog with autism and a storm-weary dachshund. The two meet on the Oklahoma prairie after being rejected by their own kind. They see in each other the things they have in common, rather than their differences, and through their friendship, become heroes! The book explains autism in a way that is easy for children to understand, and it contains messages about prejudgment, embracing differences in self and others, overcoming fear and the power of faith and friendship. The book has received nationwide acclaim and he is currently working on his next book project.
As a stay-home father for two special needs children and a nature enthusiast, Decker offers Sulphur Springs Special Needs Retreat a broad perspective and extensive experience.
